Tips for saving energy in summer
Tips for saving energy in summer
Use the air outside to dry your clothes, keep your home cool at night by opening the windows, prepare your home for your holidays...
A few easy steps and a bit of common sense to save energy in summer
I save energy with my household appliances
- Whenever possible, I let my laundry air-dry instead of using the dryer.
- Alternatively, one should:
- select a strong spin cycle
- clean the filter of the tumble dryer after each use
- use the "iron dry" program, which consumes less energy than the " cupboard dry" program
- I put my refrigerator and freezer in a cool, well-ventilated place and not near a heat source.
- I check the freezer and refrigerator door to ensure the seals are tight and I avoid leaving the doors open unnecessarily.
- I defrost the freezer regularly.
- I allow hot foods to cool (preferably outdoors) before placing them in the refrigerator or freezer.
- I set the appliances to the appropriate temperatures:
- Freezer -18 °C.
- refrigerator 7 °C.
- I dust the back of the refrigerator and freezer to promote heat dissipation and leave 5 cm of space between them and the wall.
- When I have to replace a household appliance, I choose the most economical one (to plan my purchase, I can refer to the oekotopten.lu website).
- When I go on vacation, I turn off household appliances (TV, printer as well as small appliances such as electric toothbrushes, telephones, electric shavers).
I optimize the lighting and air circulation in my home to save energy
- I use daylight whenever possible, rather than switching on lights.
- When I have to turn on the lights, I replace incandescent, eco-halogen or compact fluorescent bulbs with LED bulbs.
- I have installed blinds/shutters on my windows to keep the heat out of the rooms.
- After sunrise, I close the blinds/shutters and windows to prevent the sun from heating the rooms.
- I avoid leaving windows in tilt-and-turn position. Instead, I choose to ventilate a lot (by creating a cross-current of air through several windows) during the night to cool my home.
- I chose not to install an air conditioner or dehumidifier. A simple fan is much more economical than an air conditioner.
- By default, I avoid unnecessary heat sources, e.g. halogen lamps, ovens, tumble dryers, refrigerators and freezers that are seldom used.
Additional tips for saving energy in summer
- I don't heat the outdoor swimming pool.
- I've installed photovoltaic panels and use my own electricity. I've also opted for solar thermal collectors to produce my domestic hot water.
- And I don't forget to set my boiler and its circulation pump to "summer" mode - it's more economical!
