The right everyday habits
Choosing energy-efficient appliances
It is sometimes necessary to replace an appliance, especially when it becomes energy-hungry with age. When purchasing a household appliance, remember to check the European energy label, which indicates its energy consumption.
Platforms such as oekotopten.lu make it possible to identify the most efficient appliances based on their energy efficiency ratings and your needs.
Comparing electricity suppliers
To reduce your electricity bill, it is recommended to compare the offers available on the market. In Luxembourg, tools such as calculix.lu allow you to easily analyse electricity supplier tariffs based on your annual consumption and place of residence.
Using household appliances more efficiently
Hobs and oven
Use pans that match the size of the hob to avoid energy loss. Cover pans to retain heat and avoid unnecessarily vigorous boiling. You can also save energy by switching off the hob or oven a few minutes before the end of cooking, taking advantage of residual heat.
For the oven, avoid preheating when it is not necessary and limit how often you open the door.
Fridge and freezer
Make sure to place your appliances in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from heat sources. Regularly check temperatures (around 7°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer) and defrost when needed. Also ensure that doors remain properly closed and avoid placing still-warm food inside.
Dishwasher
Only run the dishwasher when it is full and use the “eco” programme. Unlike quick cycles, this mode uses less energy, even if it takes longer.
Washing machine and tumble dryer
Heating the water accounts for the largest share of energy consumption. Therefore, opt for low-temperature programmes (30°C). Only run your machines when they are full and use “eco” settings.
Whenever possible, favour air drying and regularly clean the filters to maintain good performance.
Multimedia devices
Devices on standby consume electricity unnecessarily. Avoid standby mode by switching your equipment off completely or using power strips with a switch.
Also unplug unused chargers and set your devices to automatic sleep mode.
Lighting
Make the most of natural light whenever possible and always switch off lights when leaving a room.
Installing LED bulbs can significantly reduce energy consumption related to lighting. Motion sensors or twilight sensors can also help optimise lighting use.
Air conditioning
Air conditioning is particularly energy intensive. Before using it, limit sources of heat within the home or room.
Ventilate at night to cool indoor air naturally and keep shutters closed during the day to retain coolness.
Reducing not only your electricity bill, but your overall energy costs as well
Reducing energy consumption is not limited to your electricity bill alone. Other areas, such as heating and transport, also account for a significant share of household expenses.
Setting the right temperature, using equipment efficiently, and choosing more energy-efficient modes of transport are all ways to sustainably reduce your expenses while lowering your environmental impact.
