Electric cars: a solution for you?

Range, charging, costs: weigh up the options before taking the plunge

You're seriously considering it: electric models are everywhere, the incentives are attractive and the energy transition is underway. But one question often comes up, sometimes with a hint of doubt: is an electric car a realistic option for my daily life?

Between preconceived notions about range, concerns about charging and price differences, it's not always easy to make sense of it all. The good news is that the landscape has changed significantly in recent years.

Watch the episode ‘Elektromobilität im Alldag’ (Electric mobility in everyday life) from RTL Energietipps to get a clearer picture. 💡

The electric mobility market is undergoing a transformation

Electric mobility is no longer a niche market reserved for pioneers: the choice of electric models is rapidly expanding across all categories.

Today, many brands offer sophisticated electric vehicles, some of which are already in their second or third generation. Certain models now boast a range of 700 to 800 km, making them a virtually equivalent replacement for combustion engine vehicles.

But beware: the advertised range always depends on several factors:

  • driving style,
  • type of journey (urban, motorway, daily distances),
  • external conditions.

So the real question is not just ‘how many kilometres?’, but ‘how do you use your car on a daily basis?’.

A car that adapts to your lifestyle

Before choosing a model, it is essential to ask the right question: does this model suit my needs?

  • Short journeys or regular long distances,
  • Daily or occasional use,
  • Charging at home, at work or in public,
  • Possibility of combining the car with a photovoltaic installation.

A well-chosen electric car does not impose any additional constraints: it fits into your existing habits.

Fast charging in Luxembourg: a rapidly expanding network of charging stations

Charging is often perceived as the main obstacle. However, here too, things have changed considerably.
In Luxembourg, there are around 3,000 publicly accessible charging points in 2026, including 500 fast charging points.
This corresponds to an average of one public charging point per kilometre of road, highlighting the scale of deployment across the entire country.
With recent models, it is now possible to charge from 10 to 80% in around 12 minutes at a fast charging station.

To help you find your way around, the ChargeCheck tool allows you to:

  • locate all public stations in the country,
  • check their availability,
  • compare prices.

As a result, charging becomes predictable, plannable and compatible with both everyday journeys and longer trips.

Purchase cost: financial incentives for electric cars that are changing the game

Price remains a key factor in the decision. Here too, the Luxembourg framework is favourable.

Klimabonus state subsidies of up to €6,000 are available for new vehicles, depending on their energy consumption and applicable criteria.

Pre-owned electric cars are also eligible for Klimabonus subsidies of up to €1,500.

These incentives significantly reduce the purchase price difference and make electric cars more affordable than you might think.

Photovoltaics and electric cars: a logical combination

Do you already have a photovoltaic system? If so, an electric car is often the next logical step.
By charging your vehicle with your own solar power, you can:

  • further reduce your mobility costs,
  • cover some of your mileage almost free of carge, especially in summer,
  • increase your self-consumption rate.

In the medium term, vehicles will even allow bidirectional use of the battery: electricity can not only be stored in the car, but also fed back into the home. This is a major advantage for making use of surplus solar power production in summer, as with mobile energy storage.

Electric mobility: a technology fit for today’s world

Whether for short or long journeys, electric mobility is now much more flexible than it was a few years ago.

Technological progress, charging infrastructure and financial incentives have profoundly changed the landscape.

In summary

  • Electric cars are no longer a marginal solution.
  • Range and charging now meet the needs of most users.
  • Financial incentives make the investment more accessible.
  • The link with photovoltaics enhances the energy efficiency of the home.
